Mirabai Chanu wins gold ,by lifting 194kg at Weightlifting World Championship.
Mirabai Chanu from India created history at the Weightlifting World Championship on Thursday by becoming the second Indian after Karnam Malleswari to win gold medal at the event. She lifted a new National record of 194kg – 85 in snatch and 109 in clean & jerk in women’s 48kg category. Mirabai Chanu wins gold
This is India’s first gold medal after the year 1995 . Thunya Sukcharoen from Thailand finished in the second place by lifting a total of 193 kg . India’s Sanjita Chanu, finished fifth in her following category.

“I owe a lot to my coach Vijay Sharma for this medal. We have worked really hard for this and hopefully, I will be able to replicate this in Tokyo in 2020,” Mirabai said after wining the gold medal.
Chanu is presently working with the Indian Railways and hails from Manipur.
Earlier this year, Chanu sealed her passage into next year’s Commonwealth Games after winning gold at the Commonwealth Senior weightlifting championships held in Australia. She had earlier failed to lift 85 kg in her second snatch attempt but showed better technique and to efficiently execute the third to stay in the second spot. She then turned things around in clean and jerk lifting, 103 kg, 107 kg and 109 kgs, respectively in the designated three attempts.

In the field of 12 lifters in the Rio Games , Chanu was one of the two lifters who couldn’t lift the weight that time. Thailand’s Sukcharoen Thunya won the silver medal with a total lift of 193, while Segura Ana Iris bagged the brozne with 182kg.
Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Azerbaijan being the World’s top lifting nations and still could not take part in the competition due to the charges against them such as ‘doping’.
