Drinking Alcohol Increases the Memory-Study Claims
People always say drinking Alcohol is not good for Health.
But the recent study claims that “Alcohol Can Boost Memory.”
According to a new study by the University of Exeter, people who drink alcohol after studying information are better at remembering what they’ve learned. Drinking Alcohol is not bad actually as per the study.
Research suggests drinking alcohol improves memory for information learned before the drinking episode began.
The researchers asked 88 people to complete a word-learning task.
The Research includes participants in two groups at random and told them to drink as much as they liked.
The same next day, they all did the same task again and those who had drunk alcohol remembered more of what they have learned.

The researchers highlighted that this limited positive effect should be considered along side the negative effects of Alcohol on memory, mental and physical health.
- “Our research not only showed that those who drank alcohol did better when repeating the word-learning task, but that this effect was stronger among those who drank more,” said Celia Morgan, a professor at the University of Exeter.
- “This research leads to the explanation that alcohol blocks the learning of new information and therefore brain has more resources available to lay down other recently learned information into a long-term memory,” said Morgan.
- “The theory is that the hippocampus – the brain area really important in memory – switches to ‘consolidating’ memories, transferring from short into longer-term memory.”
The Study performed earlier lab-based drinking studies that found alcohol improved memory. The researchers can use these natural drinking settings studies for further effects of alcohol. In those future studies, researchers will see if there is any relationship with sleep.
Drinking alcohol also increases Slow-wave sleep (SWS) or good sleep that is also important for memory encoding and storing.
